Cotopaxi Volcano Hiking, 1 Day

Level: Moderate
ATC-01

The Cotopaxi National Park is a 36,000 hectare nature and wildlife sanctuary established around the highest active volcano in the world. Its unique ecosystem is a spectacular place to hike and explore for rich wildlife and stunning volcano scenery.

We depart from Quito driving south through the inter-Andean valleys until we reach the Cotopaxi National Park entrance. The moorland environment in the park is unique and endemic to the Andes. We visit Limpiopungo Glacier Lake to walk along a trail to explore the birdlife such as Andean gulls, ducks and falcons. We also hike to several other small lakes and rivers on the lookout for llamas, wild horses (introduced), deer, hare, and even the endangered Andean Condor. A healthy and appetizing picnic lunch will be served by your guide. Finally, we will visit the Pucara ruins which were used by the Inca's up until the Spanish conquest. We return to Quito in the afternoon. (L)
