Cuicocha Crater Lake Kayaking, 1 Day

The Imbabura province in northern Ecuador is known as the lake province and Cuicocha Crater Lake is likely the most spectacular of all! The lake is settled within steep crater walls and paddling here is dramatic, as well as a great birdlife viewing experience. During our travel we will enjoy northern Ecuador's beautiful scenery, cultures and even a stop to visit the Otavalo Indian Market.

We depart from Quito, heading north towards Imbabura, "Province of the Lakes". We arrive at Cuicocha Lake, a nature reserve nestled in the Andes at 3,070 m. Cuicocha translates as "Lake of the Guinea Pigs" in the local Kichwa language. This powerful lake is within one of the craters of the Cotacachi Volcano, that according to ancient belief was the mother of the Imbayas, a Pre-Inca tribe. Once on shore we practice our paddling technique before heading out to explore the lake and its two center islets. We will be on the lookout for great birdlife which includes the Andean condor, falcons, ducks, gulls and hummingbirds. We paddle to explore this stunning landscape for about two hours. A healthy and appetizing picnic lunch will be served. Before we return to Quito we will visit the Otavalo Indian Market, one of Ecuador's most important indigenous bazaars filled with handmade leathers, clothes, tapestries, jewelry, ceramics and wood carvings.
